Grilled Spicy Burgers

Fire up your grill and make these spicy burgers for your next weekend meal or family gathering. The delicious burgers tease with the spice of two different kinds of vibrant and 100% traditional Mexican hot sauce. Burgers have never tasted better!

So, let me tell you about the incredible hot sauce I use when making this mouthwatering spicy burger recipe: De La Viuda Hot Sauce.

De La Viuda creates a traditionally authentic Mexican hot sauce (in two flavors) with a blend of Mexican peppers (chile de árbol, poblano, habanero) and hand-selected premium ingredients and spices.

Key Ingredients

  • Ground beef – For a good juicy burger, look for a cut with 15-20% fat content (often marked as 80/20 or 85/15 lean). Anything leaner and you run the risk of it drying out on the hot grill.
  • Hot sauce – De La Viuda Hot Sauce Original and De La Viuda Hot Sauce Green Pepper. This hot sauce brand is new to the U.S. and I love it because it has carefully crafted flavor to balance the heat. Never buy a hot sauce that’s hot simply for the sake of being hot. The flavor is where it’s at and De La Viuda has undeniable flavor. I highly recommend it.
  • Spicy ketchup – Easy to make, impossible to resist. (Directions below.)
  • Poblano peppers – These peppers are similar to bell peppers but have a little more of a kick. They complement the hot sauce perfectly. (Directions on how to grill them below.)
  • Colby-Jack cheese – A delicious mild melting cheese perfect for burgers.

Spicy Burger Recipe How To’s

How you season burger patties makes all the difference in the world and these spicy burgers are bursting with flavor.

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with chili powder, cumin, black pepper, garlic powder and De La Viuda Hot Sauce Original.

(You could use the De La Viuda Hot Sauce Green Pepper instead of or in addition to the Original red sauce.)

Divide into six burgers of equal size and form into patties.

Heat coals in a charcoal grill until they turn orange and ash over.

Grill the burger patties over direct heat, with the lid closed, until cooked to desired doneness, flipping once.

When burgers are within a minute of being done, lay a slice of cheese over the top and let melt. Toast the buns, cut side down over direct heat – this won’t take long at all, so keep an eye on them.

Remove burgers and buns from grill.

How to Grill Poblano Peppers

Place the pepper strips in a grill basket and grill over direct heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Remove to indirect heat while grilling patties.

How to Make Spicy Ketchup

Have you ever tried kicking up the flavor of ketchup with some hot sauce? DO IT!

Add one tablespoon De La Viuda Hot Sauce Green Pepper and one tablespoon De La Viuda Hot Sauce Original to one cup of ketchup. It adds so much flavor and zestiness to a staple condiment.

How to Dress Burgers

Lay the burger patties on the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top the burgers with poblano pepper strips, a spoonful of spicy ketchup, two strips of bacon, tomato slices, shredded lettuce, cilantro and a splash of De La Viuda Hot Sauce.
