Why Is It Called Punch?

The word ‘punch’ actually refers to a wide variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. During the 1600s, the East India Trading Company introduced punch to the west, sharing the idea with employees back in England. Punch, translated from Hindi, means ‘five,’ referring to the number of ingredients you need… alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and spices.

Nowadays, punch is a staple beverage at most holidays, parties, or family get-togethers. The ingredients we use to make it have changed, but not all that much, the most notable additions being sparkling soda and fresh fruit or citrus slices.

What Is In A Punch?

Punch is a broad beverage category; many drinks qualify as a punch, but a couple of crucial ingredients tell you it’s punch. Hard liquor, wine, beer, or fruit juice act as the base ingredient for most punches; citrus juice is added, such as orange or lemon, and fresh fruit or herbs are added, along with another alcohol or a sparkling soda.

Thanksgiving Punch

Make holiday entertaining a little easier by mixing up a flavorful Thanksgiving holiday punch. This nonalcoholic recipe offers a delicious combination of apple cider and blood orange with a delicate sparkle that’s very refreshing. The seasonal taste is sure to please everyone, and you get the pleasure of mixing it up ahead of time.

  • Prep: 10 mins
  • Refrigerate: 3 hrs
  • Servings: 30 servings
  • Yield: 1 gallon

Ingredients

  • 2 quarts apple cider
  • 1 cup spiced syrup
  • 2 cups frozen cranberries, divided
  • 1 medium apple, sliced
  • 1 medium orange, sliced
  • 2 (11.15-ounce) cans chilled sparkling blood orange juice
  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle chilled sparkling grape juice
  • Cinnamon sticks, for garnish

1. In a large pitcher, combine the apple cider and spiced syrup. Stir well.

2. Add about half of the frozen cranberries and all of the apple and orange slices to the pitcher. Cover and refrigerate overnight (or at least 3 to 4 hours) to allow the flavors to marry. Keep the remaining cranberries frozen.

3. When it’s time to serve, add the sweetened apple cider and all of the fruit to a punch bowl. Finish it off with the sparkling blood orange and grape juices. Stir to combine.

For smaller punch bowls, mix only half of the 3 liquids in the bowl. Combine the remainder in the apple cider pitcher and store it in the fridge. When the punch bowl needs to be refilled, it will be chilled and ready for you to pour.

4. Ladle the punch into individual glasses, adding a few of the remaining frozen cranberries to each to keep the drinks cold. Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick as well.

Tips

  • All of the fruits like to float in liquid, especially the cranberries. By adding the apple and orange slices to the cider last, they’ll weigh down the cranberries and ensure their flavor gets into the liquid as well.
  • The frozen cranberries replace the need for ice and prevent dilution. You can also freeze fresh cranberries before making the punch.
  • Sparkling blood orange juice is available from a few companies. San Pellegrino is probably the best known, and 11-ounce cans are often available at well-stocked grocery stores.
  • You can purchase a spiced syrup at most supermarkets, and the best selection tends to appear in the autumn months. Look for drink syrups in the coffee aisle.

Recipe Variations

  • Use fresh-squeezed orange juice instead of sparkling blood orange. Make up for the lack of carbonation by adding a little club soda or ginger ale to the punch bowl.
  • Sparkling white grape juice can be replaced with ginger ale. A citrus-flavored Italian soda or sparkling water is a good substitute as well.

Adults-Only Party Punch Recipes

Holiday Punch

This is our favorite festive party drink, perfect for Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, or Christmas celebrations!

This bright and bubbly vodka punch is made with the season’s favorite flavors like cranberry, orange, apple cider, and ginger. It’s one of our very favorite drinks for the holidays and after one sip, you’ll taste why!

  • Prep: 5 minutes
  • Serves 14

Ingredients

  • 32 ounces cranberry juice (1 large bottle)
  • 16 ounces orange juice (2 cups)
  • 750 milliliters sparkling apple cider (1 bottle)
  • 2 liters ginger ale (1 large bottle)
  • 8 ounces Everclear or vodka (1 cup)

Optional Garnishes

  • Orange slices and fresh cranberries

Instructions

  1. Pour all ingredients into a punch bowl and stir well to combine. Top with orange slices and fresh cranberries.
  2. Pour over ice to serve. If you’re feeling spunky, you can add a bit more Everclear.
  3. Enjoy!

Tips

  • Non-Alcoholic Variation: For a non-alcoholic version, simply leave out the alcohol. It’s just as delicious and great for guests of all ages!
  • I recommend using 100% pure cranberry juice. This is the base of the punch, giving it a sweet and tart flavor. You can use cranberry juice cocktail, but it will be much sweeter because of the added sugars.
  • You can substitute regular apple cider or apple juice, but it will be missing that fizziness.
  • You can also substitute sparkling grape juice, but the flavor will be slightly different.
  • I recommend using Everclear for this recipe, but regular vodka or white rum will also work.
  • Throw some fresh orange slices and fresh cranberries into the punch bowl to dress it up for Christmas parties.
